Just 90 seconds away from exiting Euro 2024, tournament-favorites England got a Jude Bellingham equalizer against underdog Slovakia in the second-to-last minute of stoppage time before winning the match 2-1 in extra time thanks to a go-ahead goal from Harry Kane.
The road doesn’t get easier for Gareth Southgate’s side, though, with a matchup against Switzerland waiting in the quarterfinals on Saturday, July 6, in Düsseldorf (12:00 pm ET). The Swiss dominated Italy 2-0 in the first round of 16 game on Saturday, allowing just one shot on target even though Italy was trailing from the 37th minute on.
The opening England vs Switzerland odds favor England advancing, but the line is much narrower than it was ahead of the Slovakia game, when England was -550 chalk to advance.

England, which failed to cash as a heavy -250 favorite to beat Slovakia in regular time, enters the quarterfinals as -120 chalk in the three-way moneyline odds. Switzerland is +300 to win in regular time while a 90-minute draw is priced at +250.

Bellingham and Kane have now scored all four of England’s goals at Euro 2024. Bellingham had the lone goal in a 1-0 tournament-opening win against Serbia, while Kane had the opener in a 1-1 draw with Denmark next time out. From Kane’s goal against Denmark to Bellingham’s equalizer against Slovakia, England went over 250 minutes without scoring a single goal.

But after Bellingham equalized, it took roughly three minutes of game time for Kane to score the winner early in the first extra-time period.
England finished the first 90 minutes with just 1.16 xGF compared to 1.20 for Slovakia, and Bellingham’s tying goal was their first shot on target.

Switzerland Dominates Italy
From the opening kick, Switzerland was the better side against Italy on Saturday, and they thoroughly deserved their 1-0 lead at halftime, which came courtesy of Remo Freuler in the 37th minute.
Credit the Swiss for not sitting back once they took the lead. An ill-advised play on the second-half kickoff from Italy resulted in an immediate turnover, and the Italians wouldn’t touch the ball again before Ruben Vargas made the score 2-0 in the 46th minute with a deft, curling strike from just inside the box.
The impressive performance against Italy was just the latest from a Swiss side that pushed Germany to the limit for top spot in Group A during the knockout stage. Switzerland handled Hungary 3-1 in their tournament opener and then had two would-be go-ahead goals disallowed by VAR in a 1-1 draw with Scotland.
They led Germany 1-0 from the 28th minute until second-half stoppage time before a Niclas Fullkrug equalizer put the Germans level and back in top spot in Group A.
The Swiss didn’t pick up a single yellow card against Italy and will have Silvan Widmer back from suspension in the quarterfinals.
England will have to do without Marc Guehi in the quarters after the center back picked up another yellow in the first half against Slovakia.
