Louisiana Senate passes sports betting bill; now heads to House

The bill, which was created by Senator Danny Martiny, will create a ballot question, providing residents the chance to approve sports wagering within the state.

If approved, it would legalise betting on college and professional sports at Louisiana’s 15 riverboat casinos, its land-based casino in New Orleans and four racetracks.

Despite being approved by the Senate, mobile sports betting would not be prohibited under the proposed bill.

Instead, an amendment was passed known as “Mississippi mobile”, which would allow wagers via mobile devices only when present at a casino or racetrack.

Louisiana’s casinos and racetracks will have the option to apply for licensure through the Louisiana Gaming Control Board.

The bill now heads to the House for approval and in plenty of time, as Louisiana’s legislative session does not end until 6 June.
