Through this partnership, the provider will make “accurate and robust” basketball tracking data, covering the NBA’s official minor-league organisation, available for players, coaches, fans, broadcasters and partners.
Since 2016, Second Spectrum has been the Official Optical Tracking Provider of the NBA, and this latest deployment will further their relationship.
The G League is designed to prepare “players, coaches, officials, trainers and front-office staff for the NBA while acting as the league’s research and development laboratory,” the organisation’s website states.
Using “machine learning and computer vision-powered technology,” Second Spectrum claims it will capture new statistics and insights including shot probabilities, player health and performance metrics, defensive metrics and off the ball metrics.
“We are thrilled to partner with Second Spectrum to elevate our basketball tracking capabilities,” said NBA G League President Shareef Abdur-Rahim.
“Working with Second Spectrum will provide the NBA G League with new data that will help our overall fan experience and advance scouting and player development for NBA teams.”
Second Spectrum was acquired by Genius Sports in May 2021, who recently entered into a partnership with the Mid-American Conference (MAC).
Regarding its latest agreement, Second Spectrum President Rajiv Maheswaran said: “We’re excited to extend our deep partnership with the NBA by deploying our solutions to the entire G League.
“This is the first step in helping both NBA teams and G League teams, as well as leagues and media partners, understand and enjoy the players and the game at the unmatched level that we have brought to the NBA.”
